California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is again disappointing the California people and creating a newly revised strategy to drain the pockets of several California tax payers as anemergency solution to their current prison crisis. Newly built prisons would be under construction to house some of the 40,000 inmates California has to relocate. With thirty-three Prisons, 173,000 inmates and only 87,250 beds the overwhelming number of inmates exceeded itsoptimum capacity by nearly 200%. Governor Schwarzenegger in a desperate attempt to reduce the population in California Prisons declared aPrison Emergency on October 4 as part of the Emergency Services Act. The Governor’s Administration began the process of shipping 2,300 inmates to private out of state correctional facilities such as Texas and Arizona. This war later ordered illegal by a Federal Judge who threatened the Governor with contempt of court. The Emergency Services Act is intended for national disasters and other situations that would overwhelm local jurisdictions and require state intervention. Problems on the Fore Front There are several problems that arise with overpopulated prisons, resulting in a high degree of medical concern. In an overpopulated prison inmates obtain a higher level of stress and elevate blood pressure. This leads to physical and psychological impairment and in an increase in medical complaints. Errors in social judgmentsand interpersonal mistakes are made. The resources for prisoners deplete rapidly due to availability. The screenings for inmates are overlooked and the management for possible problematic prisoners is skipped causing an uneasy environment when mentally ill prisoners interact with the general population. Systems that grow at this lightening speed are at risk for losing their organizational stability and unable to maintain the grounds they guard with authority in place. There are a few simple solutions to help the population from increasing without osting the California taxpayers more money to build new construction prisons that appear to be overlooked. Ideas In an obvious attempt to lower the prison population the courts could shorten sentences given to convicted drug offenders. Those with convictions of possession, under the influence and minor distribution could be shortened or given alternative means of punishment. Also prostitution and solicitation charge s could be reduced. These offenders if charged with three like crimes are most likely sitting in prison for several years under the three strikes law. The cost for one year imprisonment in California runs close to $50,000. 0 per inmate. Take 173,000 inmates and multiply by 50,000 and the total equals $8,650,000,000. 00. To achieve this, I and a medical student, Nicole need to follow and interview a patient in an effort to discover the patient lived experience regarding issues of health and illness. In this essay, the first PCP(FL) visit, my thoughts and feelings will be described and evaluated based on evidence from the literature sources. Griffiths and Crookes (2006, p.186) suggest that multidisciplinary teams are needed in the health care system to provide holistic care to patients with optimal use of existing resources, and limited cost. This project is the first step in enhancing interdisciplinary co-operation and understanding between nursing and medical students. Both I and Nicole are required to fill in a problem-oriented patient record (POPR) after each visit. We have to co-operate with each other to recruit and interview one patient with the help of nurse specialist (diabetes), Ms. Shimen Au at the Ruttonjee and Tang Shiu Kin Hospitals. The patient that we had recruited called Mrs. Leung who is a 52-year-old housewife. She is currently married and lives with her husband. Her husband was unemployed and they had financial support offered from the government. She was suffered from diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and rheumatoid arthritis about ten years ago and first diagnosed to have bipolar affective disorder at age of 22. After we had explained the aims of this project to Mrs. Leung, she signed two identical consent forms, one copy to be kept by the patient whilst the other to be returned to the tutor. I was worried that she would become obese and thus increase the risks of falling and having cardiovascular diseases. I felt regret I had not encouraged Mrs. Leung to do some simple exercise regularly so as to keeping active and not staying in bed for all days. I needed to find some suitable exercise for her and advise her to do exercise in the next visit. Improving my skills in this area will also make me more effective in discussing cases with colleagues, and in participating in teams when necessary. This visit made me realized that I can talk confidently once I overcome my initial fears. It demonstrated to me that in order to make progress or create positive change you must first acknowledge that a problem exists. This is a lesson which may be useful in better understanding patient behaviour and attitudes. This competition is like all the rest but I wasn’t looking so much at the meals being prepared, I was watching the exchanges going on with the chefs the announcer and the judg es. They all have a different ethnical background and also are from a different culture.The competition began with the type of foods that will be prepared into different courses. The chefs look at the food and began. Mario Batali is Italian and his pride is on the line because he is competing with a first time contender. Mario is not worried about the cooking but about the win. Then there is the first time contender trying to make a name for herself as a professional chef although she has cooked for some of the most famous restaurants in California she still had to prove that she can best Mario Batali.Mario Batali specializes in Italian cooking and Des Jardins specializes in Frenc-california cooking. They were both raised in this cultural background from which they began their profession. Mario is a very proud Italian and it shows in the work in the kitchen. He shows Des respect and courtesy but he takes pride in the dishes being made. Des Jardin also has her pride in the dishes tha t is being made. Transcendentalists were fighting for the freedom of slaves and it was only natural that those women of the movement would identify with this cause. Even though social oppression doesn’t have the same negative connotation as a word like slavery it was enslaving the minds, hearts, and finances of Nineteenth Century women and characters. Margaret Fuller was an author, critic, editor and teacher who possessed great influence on American women. She was a brilliant and highly educated member of the Transcendentalist movement; she challenged the world both intellectually and emotionally. Women who attended her lectures found Fullers influence life-changing. Her works profoundly affected the womens rights movements. Hester Prynne is the main character of Nathaniel Hawthornes romantic novel, The Scarlet Letter, which is set in seventeenth-century Puritan New England. As a young woman, Hester married an elderly scholar, Roger Chillingworth, who sent her ahead to America to live but never followed. While waiting for him, she had an affair with a Puritan minister, after which she gave birth to Pearl. Hester is immediately ostracized from the stern community and endures years of loneliness. From this alienated point she is able to make observations about her community, particularly about its treatment of women. There seems to be a connection. Hester is a fictional character who is shunned from her community as punishment for her adulterous sins. In contrast Fuller was a highly educated writer and critic who played an important role in the American Renaissance in literature and to mid-nineteenth century reform movements. However, both are forced to suppress their own emotional needs because there was no room for this kind of expression in the strict Puritan community. Every human being needs the opportunity to express their feelings; otherwise the emotions are bottled up and locked away. Unfortunately, Puritan society did not permit any kind of emotional expression, thus the characters had to seek alternate means to relieve their personal desires. Luckily, for at least some of the main characters, Hawthorne provides a sanctuary in the form of the mysterious forest. It provides an escape from the strict mandates of law and religion, to a refuge where men, as well as women, can open up and be themselves. Here in the forest we see the real Hester, who has been hidden for years under a shield of shame. It was this alienation that put Hester in a unique position. She was able to look upon society from the outside, and make acute observations about the community, particularly about its treatment of women. The text describes Fuller in a similar way. A seemingly modern American intellectual figure that was conflicted and alienated. However Fuller was a great thinker who, despite or because of her alienation, looked hopefully to popular, social transformations. Almost as though the life of Margaret Fuller was the kind of life that Hester Prynne dreamed of living. Perhaps Hester deserves more credit than she thinks. Who knows what she could have achieved for the rights of women and social reformation had she lived in the nineteenth century, and, like Fuller spent great deals of time reading, thinking, and writing. Hester Prynne could have been a revolutionary. The saddest part of The Scarlet Letter is Hesters repression by the Puritans. Without these constraints, her intellect could have blossomed. Just as women who attended Margaret Fullers talks found her influence life-changing, the women of Hester Prynnes community came to her home for advice and comfort in times of hardship and frustration. It is not difficult to see Hester transformed several hundred years into our own present, conducting something like a women’s rally. Another parallel between these two women is the way they placed their own best judgment before any religious doctrine. However, despite their different backgrounds, Hester Prynne and Margaret Fuller seem to have had similar characters. Both suffered alienation during their lifetimes, and both realized injustices in society as a result of this isolation. The main difference between them was that Margaret Fuller had the opportunity to express her ideas, whereas Hester, a woman stained by sin, had no chance.
